How To Wear Your Watch (Etiquette)

1. Know the Proper Watch Size for Your Wrist

  • Rule: Choose a watch case diameter that suits your wrist size — typically:

    • 36–40mm for smaller to average wrists (6"–7").

    • 40–44mm for larger wrists (7"+).

  • Why It Matters: A watch that fits your wrist shows taste and an understanding of proportion. Oversized or undersized watches often signal trend-chasing or lack of knowledge.

2. Dress Watches Stay Thin and Under the Cuff

  • Rule: Pair slim, minimalist watches (think 6–9mm thick, 36–39mm wide) with formal wear. Leather strap, white/silver dial is classic.

  • Occasion: Business, black-tie, weddings.

  • Why It Matters: It shows you respect tradition — understated elegance beats flashy complications with formal wear.

3. Tool Watches Aren’t for the Office

  • Rule: Avoid chunky dive or pilot watches with a suit unless the setting is casual or creative.

  • Why It Matters: Wearing a Submariner or G-Shock to a boardroom says you're not in tune with classic sartorial codes.

4. Don’t Set the Date Backwards

  • Rule: Never set the date function between 9 PM and 3 AM. It can damage the movement.

  • Why It Matters: This small act reveals deep mechanical respect — a hallmark of true enthusiasts.

5. Match Metals and Leathers

  • Rule: Coordinate the metal of your watch (case and buckle) with your belt buckle, cufflinks, and wedding band. Leather strap? Match shoes and belt.

  • Why It Matters: This subtle harmony signals aesthetic sophistication.

6. Respect Water Resistance Ratings

  • Rule: Don’t swim with a 30m-rated watch. Use dive-rated (200m+) watches for actual water use.

  • Why It Matters: It shows technical awareness — not all watches with a screw-down crown are made equal.

7. Keep the Crystal and Case Clean

  • Rule: Wipe smudges and fingerprints regularly. Avoid placing the crystal face-down on surfaces.

  • Why It Matters: A clean, well-maintained watch shows pride in ownership, not just a flex.

8. Know the Story Behind the Watch

  • Rule: Be able to talk about your watch's heritage — whether it's a Seiko SKX or a Patek Philippe.

  • Why It Matters: Sharing passion and history builds camaraderie in the watch community. It’s not about the price — it’s about the legacy.

9. Don’t Flex, Share

  • Rule: Never brag about price or rarity. Invite others to admire your watch without showing off.

  • Why It Matters: True horologists bond over mutual love, not ego. Quiet confidence and humility always win.

10. Smart Watches

  •  Rule: Smart watches belong in casual, fitness and tech environment nowhere else.

  • Why It Matters: Watch enthusiast know it's all about the style and the look not about what it can do.
